In week 11, I presented the topic of speculative design. My part of the presentation was about questioning the connection between art and design and showing where those disciplines collide and merge.

While I was preparing the presentation, I found Elliott Montgomery's map of his perspective on the terminology. There are many of those mappings out there, but I thought that one is an accurate one for me. I like it because it shows the overlap between Design and Art, as well as it visualizes that Speculative Design contains many aspects and disciplines.

Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby

I shortly introduced Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby to the class. These two are basically the inventor of the term of Speculative Design. They are since over two decades pioneers in that field.

«We believe that by speculating more, at all levels of society, and exploring alternative scenarios, reality will become more malleable and, although the future cannot be predicted, we can help set in place today factors that will increase the probability of more desirable futures happening.» found on: https://www.nesta.org.uk/blog/speculative-design-a-design-niche-or-a-new-tool-for-government-innovation/

The What-If-Question

The Speculative Design builds on dialogues by using fictitious objects at the core of its inquiry and by posing the what if-question. Removing all constraints of the commercial sector that defines a normative design process and apart from any rules, it builds up a safe space for dreaming, questioning, challenging, and debating. This method brings up a critical approach and breaks a static view. Speculative Design isn't just about how the future will look like. Furthermore, it is also a way of analyzing, critiquing, and re-thinking the past. I think in today's world, at a fast pace, it creates a vital role in asking the right question. Speculative Design helps to define those questions.
