Besides the design in the everyday context, we also spoke about the connection between Sci-Fi and Design.

While we could say that Sci-Fi does not have any boundaries or restrictions, because it doesn’t need to work, the design meant to function. But they are similar although. Design is for personas in scenarios, and Sci-Fi is for characters in stories.

If we look closely at the connection between these two, we can find a symbiotic aspect. Sci-Fi from the past inspires many designs we use today. Precisely for this reason, the benefit of Sci-Fi is the none existing boundaries. They don’t have any limitations while creating all that stuff. There is no focus on the implementation and realization – only the entertaining aspect. But if there is an approach to develop designs for everyday context, a designer can implement the inspiration from Sci-Fi and find a solution.

What we can find in Sci-Fi movies:

I definitely have to watch some old sci-fi movies.

Defamiliarization

The technique of defamiliarization first mentioned the Russian writer named Viktor Shkylovsky in 1917. It was a big part of the art of the twentieth century, also included in movements like Dada, postmodernism etc.. Defamiliarization is a technique of looking an object in another angle and also searching for other uses or misuses. It opens a broad perspective for a purpose or a topic and can create a shift in the normal, anticipated form of perception and, by so doing, reveals the world anew. It forces individuals to experience the everyday, ordinary in new ways through the use of an artistic language.

In groups, we looked at an object and had to defamiliarize an everyday product. My group had a clothes hanger from IKEA. You can use it for scratching your back, as mobile to hang smaller objects as well as a cutting utensil and a benchmark.
